To go or not to go…..
You want to pursue further studies and are toying with the idea of whether you want to do it with a local institution or a foreign one. You are cracking your head with frens & family asking, "Gimme 10 good reasons why I should do it overseas and not here". Does this sound like you?
Pursuing a degree locally or overseas has its own merits. Of course before you go spinning the world map and blindly pointing your index finger on a spot and whisking off without a second thought,do take a moment…
Dawn, is one gerl who chose an overseas education. She did so, not only because she gets to attain a prestigious qualification but also since, she wanted to experience, independence, solitude, various cultures, lifestyle and the picturesque environment. She flew to Lucern Switzerland in 2000 to read tourism management at the International Tourism Institute of Switzerland (ITI).
It was a only 6-month stint but it has left a deep impression in Dawn's heart so much so that the photos brought her memories flooding back. "Studying overseas is different from Singapore because you can't expect to be spoon-fed; there is no right or wrong answer so you have to take your initiative to do a draft of the assignment answers before asking the lecturer if you are on the right track" said Dawn. She made close frenz there with students from Asia, England etc. It was definitely not all work and no play. Of course you miss your family and initially fight back your tears but just taking in the entire sights, sounds and people there makes you feel less lonely. Since you are in the same boat as your classmates you develop a special bond. They do sweet things like cooking and celebrating your birthdays including getting you drunk!
One of the things Dawn learnt, was speaking German as well as the history of the Swiss architecture. The Kepel Bruke (Chapel Bridge), built in the 16th century, had half of it burnt down & rebuilt again years later. I was amazed by her knowledge of some of their cultural festivals such as "Fasnacht" which is similar to the western version of Halloween. "Fasnacht", says Dawn, "is celebrated right before Lent (40 days fasting period), before Good Friday and Easter." She had such great fun in the merry-making.
The one place that Dawn enjoyed most was a small town known as Interlaken, which is popular for its mountainous landscape.
When asked, what Dawn would like to advise our young people during this depressed economy, & rising un-employment, "Do what you like, not what others think you should, but if it cannot be attained in the time-being, dun hesitate to take on any jobs temporarily, while not losing sight of your goals" said she.
Cheerios & O-podu for our Dawn for sharing her experiences and pictures with us.Si wishes her all da best. Good luck, and have a great learning and mind-opening experience for the rest who are going for a foreign live-in education soon!!!
