Shanmugam The Keling Kia Trilogy

Si Crew Review : We caught the preview show on 26 May. At 7.20 we were ushered into the Guinness Theatre- a flexible black box performance space.

We climbed the rather very old and rusty metalic audience stand and found a comfy spot to sit at..We were told it was a cinematic drama. So we thought it meant to be a drama already preshot and played. But to our surprise it was a hybrid of real acting cast together with cinematic projections and multimedia to tell the story more vividly.

This play is a one of its kind as it charts the Tamils history especially in the backdrop of the interwar period. The story of Shanmugam an Indian chap from India who sneaked into Malaya and then to Singapore was staged so brilliantly. The mix of excellent actors, superb character development, good lighting and music, deeply researched history material and audience participation was beyond our expectation. The phrase 'Keling Kia' was also historically analysed in one segment.

This drama has to be experienced as words are just not enough. The team has reached a new dimension in drama production. A fictitious character symbolically telling the story of how tamils came to Singapore; an interplay of a story plot with documentary material. The correct mix of emotions, humour, pain, determination, friendship, love and patriotism brought out the best of the story.

You might have heard of people who have raised controversies over the title of this play. There may be a segment of public who may feel that the term, "keling Kia" is degradatory and sensitive. This play does not seek to condemn Indians ourselves. It explains how the term came about with historical evidence. It seeks to educate not degrade. As Kamal Hassan once said, "There is nothing wrong with the movies we make, it is the audience who are not ready to appreciate our work".So give the production team a chance. We strongly urge you to go with an open mind..

Hats off to Vadi and his team! If you managed to watch this play, please add your reviews here.
