Smoking Women
In theory, we know that a cigarette has 4000 chemicals in it, such as Tar, Mothball, Pesticide and even Dish washing agents. Smoking is equivalent to drinking a glass full of 4000 chemicals! Sounds awful doesn't it?! Definitely not your cup of tea. What more, our beautiful Indian women smoking?
Lately the ratio of women smoking in our society has increased from a drastic 1:10 to a 2:5. What has caused this increase? Is smoking a new found trend amongst our women or is it a mode of stress release?
According to few, it's a new fashion statement. Some never leave home without their ciggs. But the question here is WHY? Why smoking? Like as if there is no other alternative. We know the consequences and yet we fail to abide. I know rules are meant to be bent but if something like smoking is going to ruin your given beauty, why are we still doing it?!
A handful of youngsters nowadays think that Smoking gets the guys' attention. That is not at all true! Smoking is also well known to suppress appetite and weight, so it's not surprising to know that women who have trouble managing their weight or are dissatisfied with their bodies are not drawn to Cigarettes.
A Victim:
"I am Priya (name changed to protect victim's identity) and I was a teenage smoker. At home I used watched my father smoke. At school I watched my friends smoke. It wasn't long before I was sucked into the habit too.
I was 16 when I had my first puff. I was doing my 'O' levels back then and I just couldn't cope with the given stress. That's when my friends (whom I thought were really friends) passed me a cigarette and told me "this will help!” At first, I was afraid but after watching my father and friends smoke for so long, I never believed the consequences.
Soon smoking became an everyday habit. I had no money and I started stealing small from my dad's pocket. All the stupidest things I did with my friends. We stole from others at school, it was thrilling and I was proud of myself. But our new found habit didn't stay a secret for long. We got caught for stealing and all of us were sent for counseling and my parents found out. My biggest humiliation.
Even that didn't stop me from smoking until I met Prem when I was 25. He was a perfect gentleman. We got married and I stopped smoking completely after that.
It has been 4 years in my marriage, I'm 29 now, yet I can't seem to conceive and have a baby of my own. Doctors have told me that I have a weak womb and my past habit has been the contributing factor. Just when I wanted to start a fresh and have a family of my own, my dreams came crashing down on me.
I still ask God, “Why me?” All the others who have smoked their lives away didn't get this punishment! It has been a depressing 3 years since I’ve heard the news and here I am today sharing my story.
Don't do the same thing I did. It's really not worth it. I thank god for such a supporting husband but I’ll never forgive myself for what I’ve done. Smoking is NOT worth! You will never believe the consequences until you go through it."
Even married women are smoking these days. According to them, smoking actually helps to relieve them of tension from their activities of daily living.
Cigarette smoking is an addiction. The nicotine in cigarettes causes both physical and psychological dependence. It is not a mode of escape; it is a trap! Every time you inhale, you feel a fake sense of well-being. This feeling only lasts for a few seconds before reality creeps back. Nicotine addiction creates stress and problems, not relieves them as some would think.
If you smoke because your friends do, get them to quit with you, or hang out with non-smoking friends instead. If you are afraid to stop because you don't want to gain weight, here's the good news: the average weight gain after quitting smoking is only 2.2kg and this can be controlled through proper eating and exercise. There is more to life than just wasting it away.
A Guy's View:
"Indian women are so beautiful. They have given beauty, their eyes, skin tone and high cheek bones. Just watching them walk down the streets will naturally turn heads towards their direction. But it's a major turn-off when she holds a Cigarette in her pretty fingers. Because I can anticipate bad breath and yellow teeth! That is really not attractive!"
Don't be fooled!
Smoking is not harmless!

Women may be more likely than men to suffer from the harmful effects of cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco.

Smoking turns your nails and teeth yellow.

Complications during pregnancy
premature labour
a low birth weight baby
