World events-funny ways it affected me…
Hmmm..past 2 to 3 years has been so ……tough on all of us peeps. The 9/11 war on terrorism, the health outbreaks such as SARS and bird flu etc really hit home and the rest of the world real bad... We suffered loss of jobs, income, feared traveling and endured a mass feeling of grief…
I personally suffered from Sars and terrorism. I was a new trainee and an aspiring flight stewardess in Mar 2003 in Singapore Airlines. Just 1 month into the training, I and 150 others were retrenched coz of Sars. People feared to travel. The airlines industry was badly hit. I was left without a job which was very frightening. My dreams of being an ambassador of Singapore and seeing the world
was dashed. Not many Indians get selected, and I was sky high with pride before I fell. Though my ex-company offered me another job and I have been back with them since, the event has affected me very much..I now think twice, thrice, maybe a hundred times before taking a risk.
Sars also affected me in terms of something else that is so very close to my heart. My dearest cousin sister was hospitalized for a blood disorder, whose name was unknown even to hematologists. As with all hospitals at that time, only 4 known visitors were allowed to visit patients. I had to sometimes fight and plead with the nurses to see my sister along with our mums and grandma. My family had to take turns canceling each other's name just to visit her each day. That was simply horrendous. The patients had a far more horrid time. They were not allowed to leave their wards. My sister didn't get to see the ground floor and the world beyond for a month and being a restless and lively 18 year old, she ever threatened to run away from the hospital as she was going mad from all that control. Hey so, you don't have to be a direct victim to suffer in this world. It just hits you in very indirect and weird ways than you can imagine..
2 months ago, Guru and I went for our honeymoon to a country (6-7 hours flight away). We were of course ahem tanned skin, and one of us had a muslim name, so we were put through at least an hour of scrutiny. Our bags were checked 100%. We had to show our itinerary to prove that we were there for a tour/honeymoon and for no other reason. Since we were gonna go free and easy and didn't wana miss our Indian food, I lugged curry powder and spices. The damned cinnamon was considered a bark and was taken away by the customs officers. That was the only thing that was illegal..phew!
Did you think that was all? Haha no..Then they found something else worth a 2nd look. They found both of our clear holders of certificates. Another female officer now came towards us and grilled us on the reasons why we had these certs on us. I was like, "We brought 'em to seek future job or business opportunities…". She eyed me intently and replied us politely that, that was okay as long as we don't use our tourist visa to work.
Madness. Here we were, trying to enter the country hoping for a wonderful vacation, but we were being gruelled by strict customs officers over stuff that would have been thought trivial at least 3 to 4 years ago.
If you peoplz also had encountered incidents as a result of world events, do share with us yupz?
